A girl’s gift for retelling events from Hollywood films changes the fate of her family in rural Chile in the 1960s. S: Herfra til evigheten (1953). The film, which screened at the Toronto International Film Festival, is a tribute to American Westerns and an exploration of the power of film/narrative to change lives. In Spanish with subtitles, the characters are taken from life and have a rather difficult life. The film is set in the “driest place in the world” and the community is not unhappy. There is plenty of room for gentle comedy and young love. The camera turns away from real violence, but not from the story, which honestly tells the story behind the scenes of a city in the icy desert for the young woman at the center of the story. The film was shot on location in an abandoned mining town, which only adds to the authenticity.
