Chronology
Background actor Willis Wu witnesses a crime in Chinatown while working on a TV show. As he investigates, he unravels a criminal web and experiences the life in the spotlight he’s always dreamed of. Yang), Fatty (Ronny Chieng), and Carl (Chau Long) see Detective Lana Lee (Chloe Bennet) on TV and debate her possible ethnicity: Carl declares, “She looks Thai,” while Fatty argues, “Man, she’s clearly Korean. Meet your Asians.” In reality, Bennet is the child of a white mother and a Chinese father.
It’s a mystery, you’ll have to watch to find out more
Early in her acting career, she changed her last name from Wang to Bennet (her father’s first name) after encountering casting agents who said they couldn’t cast her as Asian or Asian-American characters, but her name also prevented her from being considered for white roles. This is a show that goes against the grain in a way that can be a little uncomfortable or even disrespectful to the plot at times. I can’t say it’s pretty or perfect, but it does have some fantastic qualities to it. The acting is fantastic, the actors change their quality and style of acting depending on the genres of each scene, which alternate between parody and existential mystery constantly.
The positives do a lot to make it still fun to watch, but they don’t really go anywhere
The directing style, camerawork, writing/dialogue, and even the color grading all change depending on the type of police procedural any given scene is parodying, though most of it is aimed at the more generic, bland, low-budget, blue-tinted cop TV series. It can feel cheesy at times, the visual effects/direction in some scenes feel weak and distracting, some of the subplots aren’t particularly engaging and seem to clash with the tone of the show, and sometimes some of the jokes or plot points are a little obvious before they happen. The chemistry between the leads is top-notch, the comedy is a good fit for anyone who’s put in the effort for a silly police procedural, and the characters are fun to watch on screen. It’s a parody of cop dramas, a cop drama, a period piece, a touching family story, a coming-of-age adventure, and an existential allegory, but the end result is less than the sum of its parts, no matter how good those parts are.
And at the cost of enjoying the thing I’m watching?
The bottom line, though, is that it sacrifices its satisfaction and entertainment value to serve its many intertwined and painfully obvious allegories. It’s purposely meant to be and end in a somewhat uncomfortable and unsatisfying way, to serve a point, but that point was hammered so hard throughout the show that it was just… unnecessary. Waste. A new season of “Silo” is one of the biggest TV and streaming premieres of this month.
