Chronology
Ailing filmmaker Leonard Fife (Richard Gere) may be fiery but is feeling his age and illness. He wants to tell his life story unfiltered before it’s too late. As a director of acclaimed documentaries, he has much to be proud of, but his military service in the Vietnam War and his past relationships harbor delicate truths. Eventually deciding to lay bare the truth and lies about his life and career, he sits down for a lengthy filmed interview with his former student Malcolm (Michael Imperioli), candidly telling stories about his younger self (Jacob Elordi) in the turbulent 1960s and beyond. At Leonard’s urging, his wife and indispensable partner Emma (Uma Thurman) hears it all. Leonard’s successes are juxtaposed with his failings – the lies with the facts – and as the man is completely cleansed of the myth, Leonard must grapple with what remains.
