A24 saw the script and greenlit the film before production on “X” had even wrapped
Chronology
In 1979, a group of young filmmakers set out to shoot an adult film on a rural Texas farm, but when their elderly and lonely hosts catch them in the act, the crew finds themselves fighting for their lives. The day after X (2022) premiered South by Southwest, writer/director Ti West revealed that while in a mandatory two-week COVID-19 quarantine at his hotel in New Zealand, before production on that film could begin, he wrote a prequel, Pearl (2022). They asked star Mia Goth if she wanted to stay in New Zealand and shoot “Pearl,” and she readily agreed.
There are no opening credits
The prequel was released later in 2022. When Lorraine enters the basement and turns on the light, there is a modern halogen light bulb, which was not available in 1979. Maxine: I will not accept a life I do not deserve.

The kills seemed conveniently cheesy and honestly everything was underwhelming
I was hoping to feel paranoid or scared, but I didn’t feel much. I spent most of the movie hoping it would improve or surprise me a bit, but we’ve seen all of this before. A24 has produced some of the most memorable horror films of the 21st century.
